Names released in McCook County fatal vehicle-tractor crash

SALEM, S.D. — The names have been released of those involved in a fatal vehicle-tractor crash.

The crash happened on Wednesday, Jan. 16, west of Salem on Highway 38.

Colin Brown, 28, of Spencer was driving a 1998 John Deere 7810 tractor westbound when he was struck from behind by a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country minivan driven by Marlys Elliot, 72, of Salem.

The tractor overturned onto its passenger side, while the other vehicle came to a rest in the center of both lanes of the highway.

Elliot suffered serious non-life threatening injuries, while her passenger Helene Eichacker, 85, of Salem, was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital and passed away from her injuries the following day.

Brown, the driver of the tractor, was uninjured. All three people involved were wearing seatbelts.

The crash happened after dark, at 5:48 p.m. The tractor had its flashing rear amber lights on.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continues to investigate the crash.
