RAPID CITY, S.D. — The names of the three individuals involved in the two-vehicle crash on Highway 16 May 31 have been released.

78-year-old Kathryn Stverak of Box Elder died at a Rapid City hospital after her 2010 Buick LaCrosse veered to the right and struck a guardrail, then crossed both eastbound lanes, went through the median and into the westbound lanes where it collided head-on with a westbound 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver and passenger of the Hyundai, 66-year-old Barry Porter and 65-year-old Marina Porter of Rapid City, suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle. They were both transported to a Rapid City hospital, and both of them were wearing seatbelts.

Highway 16 was shut down for 48 minutes and then limited to one lane that opened for 12 additional minutes. The scene was completely reopened to traffic after this time.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the incident.
