Name released in fatal Rapid City motorcycle crash

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Rapid City Police Department has released details of the fatal motorcycle-vs-pickup crash that took place on the night of Friday, May 22.

At around 9:40 p.m., police were dispatched to the intersection of Mount Rushmore Road and Flormann Street for a report of a motorcycle-vs-pickup crash. On arrival, they observed a large crowd gathered around the motorcyclist. A passerby had begun emergency life-saving measures on the motorcyclist until a medical unit arrived and transported the rider to the hospital.

Witnesses on scene described that the motorcycle had been southbound on Mount Rushmore Road, when it accelerated to a high rate of speed. The motorcycle struck the passenger side of a truck that was making a left hand turn into a nearby parking lot.

The motorcyclist was later declared deceased at the hospital in the early morning hours of Saturday, May 23. The deceased is identified as 19-year-old Joseph Hays of Piedmont.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
