Name released in Custer County fatal motorcycle-vehicle crash


CUSTER, S.D. — A Villard, MN, man has been identified as the person who died in a vehicle-motorcycle crash on Wednesday, July 22 around 1 p.m., seven miles south of Keystone.

A 1996 Harley Davidson Motorcycle was traveling westbound on Iron Mountain Road when the driver failed to negotiate a right-hand curve. The motorcycle went into the oncoming lane and collided with a 2009 Dodge Ram 2500 pickup that was heading eastbound.

Dean Schwendeman, the 58-year-old motorcycle driver, was wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Both occupants of the pickup, a female driver and a male passenger, were wearing seat belts and weren’t injured. Both 41-year-olds were from Rye CO.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
