Multiple fire crews respond to grass fires in eastern Pennington County

PENNINGTON COUNTY, S.D. — Multiple Pennington County agencies are responding to multiple grass fires in the Wall and Wasta areas of eastern Pennington County.

Rapid City Fire Department says two of their engines were called out to assist, along with multiple other fire agencies from the county.

Additionally, hazy visibility and air quality conditions may continue from the wildland fires ongoing in California.

Wasta Volunteer Fire Department responded to a two alarm fire around 5:00 p.m. in the 18000 block of Base Line Road Sunday.

On arrival, firefighters observed a fire burning in cured grass and brush, with flame lengths between three to five feet in length striking a need for a second alarm.

The fire has an estimated containment of 2,500 acres, but the official number will be announced sometime later Monday along with the damage estimate.

No injuries are reported at this time.
