Mountain lion spotted on Box Elder school grounds

UPDATE: Box Elder Police euthanized the lion


BOX ELDER, S.D. – The hunt is on for a mountain lion in Box Elder.

The animal was seen on school property within the Douglas School District Thursday between 5-5:30 a.m. The sighting was confirmed on school video. Parents were notified around 11:30 a.m.

A message from Superintendent Alan Kerr says, “We are keeping all students off playgrounds as a precautionary measure until further notice. Administration is working with Game, Fish and Parks to determine what further action is needed.”

Police will continue their search for the lion into early Friday.

If you see a mountain lion, do not approach it. Instead, call State Radio Dispatch at 605-394-2192 or Wildlife Conservation Officer Chris Dekker at 605-390-0923.
