Monument Health hosting community health summit during Stock Show
The Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo Rapid City offers many opportunities for entertainment and fun this time of year but now they are adding health concepts to the mix.
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Attendees to Rodeo Rapid City held in conjunction with the Black Hills Stock Show can receive free and low-cost health services, preventive screenings, as well as information about staying healthy, during the first Community Health Summit sponsored by Monument Health.
Cory Ferguson, Community Relations Specialist at Monument Health, says, “We want to partner in the community and be able to do this as a community service, and you know this is a great opportunity for us at the Stock Show and the Ag community. So to be able to have these offerings to people who might not get into town to see their doctors as often as they need to. This is a great opportunity for them just to come in and talk to some health care experts, get some screenings done and get some things done they might not normally do.”
Visitors can get everything from blood pressure checks, flu shots, CPR training, lab tests, and other health care services during the stock show from 3-7:30 p.m. each day.
Visitors can also hear talks from noon to 1 p.m. each day from doctors and other health care professionals about subjects such as foot pain, stroke prevention and screening for heart and lung problems.
Different booths with health care experts from different departments will be on hand to answer questions and chat with visitors, including behavioral and mental health concerns in regards to the agriculture industry.
Melea Hoeffner, Music Therapist Behavioral Health at Monument Health, says, “We are partnered with Avera for the farmer stress and then there is also farm crisis resources, so if there has been livestock lost, or feed loses, any kind of land that has been destroyed by either weather or otherwise. There are resources that are available because those are really stressful times and you might not know how it’s going to affect you until you are in the moment of it.”
Monument Health plans to conduct future Community Health Summits at the Civic Center in conjunction with its large-scale events.
The Health Summit is located in the Ice Arena now until Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day of the Stock Show with clinical screenings and preventive care available from 3 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day.
