Minnehaha County crash leaves one dead, another injured

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — A two-vehicle crash that happened Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 229 has left one person dead and another injured.

The crash happened in Sioux Falls at mile marker 9, between Benson Road and Rice Street, around 4 p.m.

A 2000 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by a 25-year-old woman was driving northbound on the interstate when it veered left, crossed the median and struck a southbound 2010 Buick Lucerne driven by a 65-year-old woman.

The 25-year-old driver of the Cavalier was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 65-year-old Buick Lucerne driver had to be extricated and was taken to a Sioux Falls hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.

The Buick Lucerne driver was wearing a seatbelt. The names of the people involved have not been released pending notification of family members.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
