Military Appreciation Barbecue continues tradition at the Central States Fairgrounds

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A 35-year tradition honoring the community’s military is taking place this Friday. It’s the annual Military Appreciation Barbecue at the Central States Fairgrounds.

Black Hills Wire and the Black Hills Military Advisory Coalition are hosting, what they say, will be the biggest barbecue yet. It’s open to the public and will feature food trucks, beer gardens and live entertainment.

The event has come a long way from its humble beginnings.

“The very first year it was held in a backyard and it was a potluck, they roasted a pig and it has grown now over the past thirty plus years to where we can be open to the public and have this be a true community celebration where we show our appreciation,” says SDEA Community Relations Director Lynn Kendall.

Festivities get started this Friday at 4:00 p.m. with an awards ceremony at the MidCo Stage where 35 local airmen and National Guard members will be honored.

Volunteers are still need for the barbecue. If you’re interested in helping, there’s more information on the Black Hills Wire Facebook page.
