Man found dead in Rapid City park Tuesday died of gunshot

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City police have identified the man found in Canyon Lake Park Tuesday morning.

David Butler, 59, of Rapid City was found with a single gunshot wound to the chest in the 4100 block of Jackson Boulevard, on the north side of Canyon Lake Park.

Police were called to the park around 6:10 a.m. after walkers reported seeing an unresponsive male near the walking path. According to a release from the Rapid City Police Department, a handgun was found “in proximity to the location where Butler was discovered.”

According to RCPD Spokesperson Brendyn Medina, the investigation continues as an “unattended death investigation.” Medina says investigators cannot “rule anything out” when determining what led to Butler’s death.

The RCPD and Pennington County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Divisions continue to investigate the circumstances.
