Man driving stolen vehicle eludes police over a mile in town

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A man has been arrested for a number of charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, after leading police on a chase through town.

At around 12:50 p.m. on Monday, police attempted to stop a truck that had made a violation as it turned north onto Milwaukee Street. The truck failed to stop, and led police for over a mile through town.

The pursuit ended when the truck drove through the dead end of Herman Street and eventually became stuck in a drainage ditch. When police made contact with the driver, they noticed that he smelled of alcohol and conducted a DUI investigation. The driver, 51-year old Matthew Quickbear of Rapid City, was found to be too impaired to drive and was placed under arrest.

During the investigation, police determined that the truck Quickbear was driving was stolen. Quickbear is facing charges for DUI, eluding, driving under suspension, possession of a stolen vehicle, and has been transported to the Pennington County Jail.
