Man convicted of killing three people and an unborn child in DUI car accident sentenced

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A man convicted in the killing of three people, and an unborn child, was sentenced to 16 years in federal prison on Friday.

Tyler Makes Him First of Porcupine was charged with involuntary manslaughter after a 2017 crash on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Makes Him First hit another vehicle head-on, killing 42-year-old Waylon Red Elk Sr., his 34-year-old pregnant wife, Jaylene Pretends Eagle, and their 1-year-old son, Waylon Red Elk Jr.

Makes Him First had a blood alcohol level of 0.284 percent, three-and-a-half times the legal limit.

His original sentencing was scheduled earlier in January, but was delayed after Makes Him First tested positive for marijuana.

He apologized to everyone affected by the crash during Friday’s hearing.
