Man arrested in attempt to rob Rapid City pharmacy

RAPID CITY, S.D. — One man is in custody after his attempt to rob a pharmacy was foiled by law enforcement early Friday morning.

At around 1:20 a.m. on November 27th, police were dispatched to the Walgreens on the 1900 block of Mt. Rushmore Road for a report of a burglary in progress. It was reported that a rock was used to break a glass window near the entrance of the store.

A deputy with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office was in the area and observed the suspect walking through the parking lot of the business. The deputy made contact with the male suspect and observed him carrying a bag full of items from the business.

The suspect turned away from the deputy and ran to the east. The deputy pursued the male on foot and other officers arrived in the area. The male was located a short time later in the 600 block of Saint Andrew Street. He refused commands to stop, but was ultimately taken to the ground and detained by law enforcement.

The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Cameron Salway of Rapid City. A search of his backpack yielded methamphetamine and associated paraphernalia.

He was placed under arrest for 3rd Degree Burglary, Obstruction, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia before being transported to the Pennington County Jail.
