Male pedestrian killed after being struck by vehicle near Maverick Junction

MAVERICK JUNCTION, S.D. — An 82-year-old man was killed in a pedestrian-vehicle crash on Monday afternoon around 1:00 p.m. near Maverick Junction.

The names of the individuals involved are not being released at this time until proper notification has been given to family members.

A 2018 Chevy Impala was traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 18 on a crest in the highway when the driver saw the pedestrian walking across the roadway near mile marker 43. The driver attempted to avoid the pedestrian, but struck him with the front passenger side of the vehicle.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene while the 72-year-old female driver was wearing a seatbelt and was uninjured.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash. All information is only preliminary at this point.
