RAPID CITY, S.D. – An unresponsive male inmate was found in his cell at the Pennington County Jail Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, the man was found at about 2:30 p.m. and medical personnel arrived to administer resuscitation efforts. The individual was taken to Monument Health Rapid City Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The person’s name has not been released pending notification of next of kin but officials confirm the man was a 63-year-old man from Rapid City being held on state charges.

The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the death investigation as routine procedure for deaths that occur in custody. Spokesperson for the PCSO Helene Duhamel says they hand the investigation to the DCI for an “uninvolved third party to look at the facts.”

An autopsy has been scheduled for March 31.
