Main Street Square begins ice rink preparations
RAPID CITY, S.D. — It is that time of year again, and with the first snow comes the build up of the ice rink at Main Street Square.
Crews start the build in mid-October following Bierborse every year, and the process itself takes about a month long.
“It’s a lot to put up the boards. We have to create an ice rink on top of the turf, which attracts heat,” said Main Street Square President and CEO Domico Rodriguez. “So there’s a lot of different layers to it. There’s mats. We have glycol, a chiller that we bring down that runs glycol through the mats to keep it cold.”
This is the 11th year for the rink and it’s set to open on November 20, but it all depends on mother nature.
