In a statement from the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, they recommend us to use safety measures, whether hunting or hiking in the Black Hills.

  • Always take a cell phone with you. Even if you have no phone service in a particular area, you might be able to get to a higher point if necessary.
  • Use a GPS guided device that marks roads. Don’t go into the woods without technology.
  • Make sure you have food, medications and layers of warmth.
  • Wear orange, or at least have brighter colors that can be tied to you or a nearby landmark in case you get into trouble and need to be found.

Pennington and Custer County Search and Rescue and other agencies were deployed along with a thermal drone in search of the missing hunter.
