Lost Cabin Wildfire breaks out in Black Elk wilderness area; more resources en route

Black Elk Wilderness FireA wildfire in the Black Elk wilderness area was reported at 9:07 Thursday night.

The Great Plains Fire Information reports that the fire is located along Trail #2 approximately 1 mile northwest of Black Elk Peak. The fire is believed to have already affected up to 5 acres. Crews are en route including Blackhawk Helicopters from the South Dakota National Guard which will be dipping water out of Sheridan Lake.

The fire is currently burning in heavy dead and down trees. According to a press release from the Forest Service, Trail #2 is closed.

For public and firefighter safety, the public is asked to stay away from this area until it is safe to return.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
