Local prosecutor sworn in as 7th Circuit Court judge

The Pennington County courthouse filled up Friday to honor the new judge

RAPID CITY S.D. – A local prosecutor was sworn in as a Seventh Circuit Court Magistrate judge Friday evening at the Pennington County Courthouse.

Hon. Sarah Morrison is from Rapid City and attended Stevens High School before going on to Vanderbilt University and the University of Minnesota Law School.

Before being sworn in, Morrison was a prosecutor with the State’s Attorney’s Office where she dealt with juvenile cases.

She says she’s excited to take the position in a circuit where she learned to be an attorney.

“I’m definitely  more comfortable in these courtrooms than if I took this type of job in a different circuit or different state,” said Morrison. “I have a lot to learn, it’s going to be a completely different role but I’m very excited for the opportunity.”

As a magistrate judge, Morrison says she will deal with bond hearings for initial appearances, misdemeanors, small claims, and protection order hearings.
