Local pickleball courts open thanks to donations, vision funds
RAPID CITY, S.D. — What is now one of the fastest growing sports in the nation among people of all ages, new pickleball courts officially opened Monday in Rapid City.
The new outdoor pickleball courts at the Canyon Lake Activity Center, add more options to the existing indoor courts.
The idea to expand began two years ago. After donations from locals and businesses and $50,000 donated by vision funds, the $150,000 project was able to be completed.
The age range of players at the activity center spans multiple generations and pickleball is bringing in a younger crowd.
“Two years ago we changed our name from Canyon Lake Senior Center to Canyon Lake Activity Center,” said Clyde Lichtenecker, Program and Marketing coordinator of Canyon Lake Activity Center. ” We were looking for the baby boomers that like to exercise and stay outdoors and that’s why we’re trying to change our image a little and it’s working.”
The activity center hopes the expansion brings more people to the Black Hills and Rapid City as a destination point for pickleball competitions.
