Senate committee unanimously votes to recommend censuring Julie Frye-Mueller

PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Select Committee on Discipline and Expulsion voted unanimously on Wednesday to recommend their report to the full Senate, which recommends that Senator Julie Frye-Mueller should be “censured for conduct by a senator unbecoming the Senate.”

The report recommends that the Senate:

  1. Censure Sen. Frye-Mueller’s conduct.
  2. Limit Sen. Frye-Mueller’s access to the LRC office and staff for the reminder of the 2023 Legislative Session.
  3. Have Sen. Frye-Mueller’s suspension lifted immediately.

This move by the Committee comes after hearing testimony from Senator Julie Frye-Mueller, her husband Mike Mueller, and the unnamed LRC staffer who filed a complaint against Frye-Mueller on Tuesday night. The Senate Select Committee voted unanimously that same night to have the LRC staff draft the report.

The full Senate will convene at 1 p.m. Mountain Time.
