Legendary Central High School coach passes away

RAPID CITY, S.D. — South Dakota has lost a high school basketball coaching legend. Longtime Rapid City Central High School boys basketball coach Dave Strain has passed away.

Strain, 88, was the boys basketball coach at Rapid City Central High School for 24 years — from 1963-1986. During that time, he guided the Cobblers to the state tournament 18 times, winning two state titles in 1969 and 1980. His teams also finished state runners-up six times.

Strain, who graduated from White River High School and South Dakota State University, finished with an overall record of 398 wins and 231 losses.

Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 8 at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City.
