Lara Rochelle Roetzel is appointed as Interim Pennington County State’s Attorney

LrrRAPID CITY, S.D. – Lara Rochelle Roetzel was appointed and sworn into office by Presiding Judge Craig Pfeifle as the Interim Pennington County State’s Attorney on Tuesday.

Earlier, State’s Attorney Mark Vargo was named as the Attorney General for the State of South Dakota.

Roetzel says, “I am humbled and excited to be able to serve my community in this role in Mr. Vargo’s absence.
Pennington County should expect strong advocacy and committed prosecution under my watch.”

She has served as a prosecuting attorney for the majority of her 26-year legal career. Since 2009, she has acted as Chief Criminal Deputy State’s Attorney for Pennington County. In that capacity she has litigated hundreds of homicide, sexual assault and other high-profile cases, as well as acted as an administrator for the office.

Roetzel graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1993 and Creighton School of Law in 1996. She was chosen as the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year in 2017.

Roetzel is married to Scott Roetzel, and is the mother of five. She is a lifetime resident of Rapid City.
