Landfill accepting items free of charge during Clean-Up Week

RAPID CITY, S.D. — This year’s annual Clean-Up Week is coming to a close, but there is still time to take advantage of the citywide project.

During Clean-Up Week, Rapid City community leaders urge citizens to take part in citywide cleanup, whether it be in homes, businesses or the community at large. Hundreds of volunteers hit the streets this time of year to pick up trash.

If you are trying to cut down on the clutter in your home or garage, the landfill will be accepting most items for free this week. Until the end of Saturday, people can drop off furniture, trash and yard waste — all at no cost.

The landfill is at 5555 Highway 79 and will be open from 7 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Employees suggest dropping off your items before Saturday to avoid long lines.

There are some exceptions to what the landfill will accept, which can be found in a Clean-Up Week information sheet on the city’s website. The landfill will not be accepting appliances that have Freon, such as freezers and air conditioners, but Pacific Steel & Recycling and A+ Recyclers will take them for free.
