Kadoka kicks off a weekend full of events and activities
KADOKA, S.D. — A busy weekend in Kadoka has kicked off on Friday with Scavenger’s Journey and Reunion Weekend, which has a number of events for people to enjoy.
Scavenger’s Journey started 10 years ago in Chamberlain to give an economic boost to small-town South Dakota, and this year is Kadoka’s third year as a part of the journey.
“We have vendors scattered all through town. It’s not your typical garage sale with your local community. You’re taking in a broad amount of people from all over and you never know what they’re going to like.” Deb Olney, town representative for the Scavenger’s Journey said. “It’s very interesting the type of things they’re looking for cause it can be anything from antiques, collectibles, flea-market type items, if they’re looking to upcycle something. And then we have the very unique vendors that do something very special. We have one gal coming in that takes cow skulls and decorates them and so they’re a great home décor piece.”
Scavenger’s Journey will bring people from surrounding states and even eastern states to experience the event, as well as boosting the small town’s economy with visitors staying in the small town, eating, filling up on gas and just passing the time in the area.
Kadoka Reunion Weekend has been an ongoing event that happens the weekend after Father’s Day. Originally, it was a way for classes to come back together to enjoy their time back in their hometown with dances, supper and other things to do.
“As time has progressed, we’ve just added a few more things to the event to make it more entertaining, cause when they come as a classmate, they’re bringing their families. So, we wanted to include that when the kids come — from younger to high school age — that there’s something for them to do too,” Olney said.
Between Friday, June 24 to Sunday, June 26, there will be a number events to enjoy including dances both Friday and Saturday nights; PRCA rodeo Friday night; kid’s watercolor, drawing class and carnival Friday; Fireman’s free will donation lunch Saturday; and a number of other events.
