Jewel Cave National Monument to resume cave tours

CUSTER, S.D. — Cave tours at Jewel Cave National Monument will resume on Thursday, February 3.

Three cave tours will be offered each day Jewel Cave is open for the rest of the winter season with the Scenic Tour being offered at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and the Discovery Tour at 1:15 p.m.

Tickets for these tours can be purchased up to three weeks in advance. Tickets can also be purchased the day of the tour inside the Visitor Center during hours of operation if they are still available.

The tours are back after massive maintenance projects from the last several years. One project was the Scenic Tour Enhancement Project, or STEP, which began in 2018 to make safety improvements to the Scenic Tour route, and this will be the first time the Scenic Tour has been offered since 2019.

With the STEP project, the Elevator Renovation Project from 2020-2021 updated outdated components and the elevator cars have been completely remodeled, new cables installed, among numerous other improvements. The elevator renovation will aid in improving the visitor experience due to the safety overhaul the elevators received.
