Jail inmate death report issued
RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation released its findings Thursday on the cause of death of a Pennington County Jail inmate.
Richard Zimmerman, 31, was arrested on Sept. 14 for a parole violation. He was found unresponsive in his cell on Sept. 15.
Zimmerman was later pronounced dead at Regional Health Rapid City Hospital.
He had swallowed a bag of methamphetamine that broke open in his stomach. The DCI report stated that Zimmerman died of methamphetamine toxicity.
NewsCenter1 reached out to the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, but they declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
