Iran must be held accountable for shooting down plane – Canada’s Trudeau
Families of the 176 people killed when Iran admittedly shot down a Ukrainian airliner deserve justice, accountability, answers, closure and compensation, a distraught Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Saturday.
Trudeau expressed outrage after Iran finally admitted Saturday that it had mistakenly shot down the airliner. Tehran said air defenses were fired in error while on alert after Iranian missile strikes on U.S. targets in Iraq.
Canada, which had 57 citizens on board, was one of the first countries to voice belief that Iranian missile brought down the aircraft.
Iran’s admission of the mistake is just the first step and must answer many questions, Trudeau said on Saturday, adding Canada would not rest until it gets the accountability, justice and closure that the families of the deceased deserve.
