Inmate serving life sentence dies in state prison

SIOUX FALLS S.D. – State prison inmate Garreth Gannon, age 61, has passed away in the South Dakota State Penitentiary due to an illness.

He was serving life sentences for attempted first-degree murder and first-degree robbery for crimes committed in Pennington County.

He was sentenced in April, 1996 after shooting and robbing Rapid City smoke shop clerk James Burr.

The release from the Department of Corrections did not specify the exact cause of death, only stating Gannon has died following an illness.
