Inmate drives away from work site in state-owned pickup

YANKTON, S.D. — Authorities are looking for a South Dakota inmate who drove away from a work site in a state-owned pickup. State Department of Corrections officials say Richard Barela left the Yankton site Friday and has been placed on escape status.

Barela took a 2007 silver Chevy ½ ton pickup with a State of South Dakota license plate that reads CH 331 from the work site.

Barela, age 28, is a Hispanic male. He is 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes. If you see Barela, know of his whereabouts or see the vehicle, contact law enforcement immediately.

Barela is serving a six-year prison sentence for possession of a controlled substance out of Hughes County.
