Infant brought to hospital after alleged child abuse

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Shortly after 5:30 on Tuesday, March 3, The Rapid City Police Department was dispatched to the 500 block on Hanover Drive in response to a report of an unresponsive infant.

According to Community Relations Specialist for the RCPD, Brendyn Medina, medical units arrived and transported the infant to the hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. In the investigation, police found that the injuries were a result of abuse.

Around noon on Wednesday, March 4, law enforcement arrested James Cunningham, 26, of Rapid City for felony child abuse. Law enforcement transported him to Pennington County Jail. The investigation is joint between the police department and the Pennington County Sheriffs Office.

RCPD wasn’t aware of any other major convictions of Cunningham who will appear at morning court tomorrow for bond sentencing.
