SURAT, GUJARAT, INDIA — An Indian space education institute said two teenage girls from India have discovered an earth-bound asteroid by poring through images from a University of Hawaii telescope.

The asteroid is presently near Mars and its orbit is expected to cross that of Earth in about one million years’ time, said Space India, a private institute where the two 14-year-old girls received training. The girls earlier trained with NASA’s citizen scientist programs with a private organization, where they learned how to study astronomical images.

The asteroid has been temporarily named as HLV-2514. An official name by the girls may be given once NASA confirms its orbit.
