Important dates regarding this spring’s municipal election

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City municipal elections are coming up this spring and petition deadlines are around the corner.

Positions on the June 4th ballot include the mayor and five seats for the city’s common council. The mayor will serve for 4 years and council members will serve 3 years. Students get to vote at real polling booths during Central High School's mock election.

Petitions must have at least 50 signatures, but the city recommends candidates to get more. Every year people will come in with exactly 50 signatures and not realize that some of the signatures are from people outside of the ward. Under 50 signatures automatically eliminates you from running.

The city will accept petitions from March 1 to March 26. All applications are due by 5 p.m. on the 26th. Applications submitted before March 1st will not be considered and neither will those submitted past 5 p.m. on the 26th.

The city finance office will have election packets available starting Monday, Feb. 25. The election packets give detailed information for those who want to submit petitions.

Also, voters should remember that the voter registration deadline is on May 20, 2019.

Below are the important date summarized:

  • March 1 – first day to circulate petitions
  • March 26 – deadline to file petitions
  • May 20 – Voter registration deadline
  • June 4 – Municipal Election
