Images created by A.I. not covered by copyright law

Images created by artificial intelligence are not covered by copyright law according to the U.S. Copyright Office.

After it ruled on illustrations in a new comic book created by the A.I. program Midjourney. While the images aren’t covered by intellectual property rights, the text is.

The author of the comic book, titled “Zarya of the Dawn,” didn’t reveal in her copyright application that the images were created by A.I. Therefore, the Copyright Office is canceling her original certificate and issuing a new one that only covers the text of the comic book.

It’s a notable development as the exploits of A.I. programs such as Midjourney and ChatGPT continue to dominate tech headlines in recent months.
