Icy roads, high winds this morning and afternoon
High winds could kick up dust and other pollutants in the Rapid City area, among other issues
If you’re traveling early this morning, be sure to pay attention to the roads, as light freezing rain has left areas of ice in places like Rapid City and surrounding areas. Take it slow this morning and give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
With the passage of a cold front later on this morning and afternoon, some snow and rain showers are possible. Temperatures will be in the 40’s for most, but cooler spots could cause more problems for road surfaces, particularly in the hills. Be cautious.
Wind advisories, high wind warnings and air quality warnings have been issued for our area this morning and afternoon, each one is broken down below.
Areas of the Northern and Eastern foothills could see high winds mix to the surface this afternoon. With the passage of a cold front, this will move in fairly quickly. A good jacket would be wise, as temperatures will feel much cooler with the wind, with highs only expected to reach low 40’s today.
With the high winds comes the expectation of dust and other aerosols to be kicked up in and around Western Rapid City. If you have sensitivity to air quality, you will want to pay attention to this closely.
Interstate 25 and areas of Campbell county are expecting higher winds, with gusts up to 60 mph possible. High profile vehicles and light vehicles will want to take caution if heading towards the Big Horns or central Wyoming.
