How to keep your presents safe while holiday shopping

RAPID CITY, S.D.– With the holiday shopping underway, local law enforcement gave advice on how to make sure your presents safely reach their destination.


The Rapid City Police Department, and the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office say this is the time of year when they get the most reports of items being stolen from vehicles.

Shopping Thefts 11While some cases are forced entry, most cases are crimes of opportunity, such as stealing from a car with unlocked doors. The two primary things you can do to keep from falling victim; lock your vehicle and cover purchased items out of sight.

If you’ve got a lot of people on your Christmas list it may be a good idea to space out your shopping.

Sergeant Gordon Larsen with the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says, “Sometimes it can be painfully obvious if you’re doing a lot of Christmas shopping that you make a lot of purchases at once. Try to do it over an extended period of time, not all at once.”

Sergeant Larson also recommends taking the exact amount of cash you need for shopping and only take it out when making payment.
