COVID at-home tests in high demand, help detect variants

RAPID CITY, S.D. — With increasing numbers of both COVID and Influenza cases, so too has the demand for home COVID tests.

The at-home COVID tests are harder to find on pharmacy shelves, with them being gone within a day of arrival. And with increasing cases of the flu, tests are in high demand for people to determine which virus they have.

To help meet demand, the federal government launched a website on Wednesday allowing people to order up to four home tests per household.

To order, visit covidtests.gov and fill out the form. You can only order the four tests once.

Covid TestingAdditionally, The South Dakota Department of Health has supplied Monument Health with at-home tests. But how effective are they in detecting the latest variants?

Monument Health Director of Laboratory Services Emily Leech says, “Right now, if you’re using an FDA EUA over the counter test right now they should pick up with both delta and the omicron variants.”

Tests ordered from the covidtests.gov website are free and usually ship seven to 12 days after the order is placed.

Monument says it will soon announce the locations for test distribution.
