House fire near Pine Ridge leaves two dead

PINE RIDGE, S.D. — Two people were found dead early on the morning of Monday, December 2nd, after a fire consumed the trailer in which they are believed to have resided.

According to Robert Ecoffey, Chief of the Oglala Sioux police, the fire was reported near 1:50 a.m. Monday, about three miles east of Pine Ridge, and had fully engulfed the trailer by the time first responders arrived on scene.

The two people found dead inside the home are believed to be the residents, but Ecoffey is waiting on DNA tests to confirm their identities before releasing that information to the public.

Ecoffey stated that the cause of the fire is being investigated by tribal police, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
