House approves measure to legalize industrial hemp production

PIERRE, S.D. — The House approved legalizing industrial hemp production on Monday, despite Gov. Noem’s suggestion not to.

Last week Noem requested that lawmakers forget about the bill for now, arguing that the state wasn’t ready for cultivation and production.

The House passed the bill by a vote of 65-2.

House Majority Leader Rep. Lee Qualm says it’s time to move forward with hemp production.

The bill will now move to the Senate.
