Hot Springs woman identified in fatal vehicle collision Sunday afternoon

OELRICHS, S.D. – A Hot Springs, S.D., woman, Helen Iverson, 72,  has been identified as the person who died in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon east of Oelrichs.

Helen Iverson was driving a Chrysler van going west on U.S. Highway 18; when she crossed the center line into oncoming traffic. As she tried to move back into the westbound lane, an approaching pickup tried to avoid her by also crossing into the westbound lane. This is where the two vehicles collided.

Helen was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

Both occupants of the pickup were injured. The driver, 69-year-old Richard Fritzler, suffered minor injuries and his passenger, 72-year-old Barbara Fritzler, sustained life-threatening injuries. The two occupants, who are from Alliance, NE, were transported by ambulance to the Fall River Hospital in Hot Springs. Barbara Fritzler was later sent to Rapid City Regional Hospital.

U.S. Highway 18 was closed for about two hours.

South Dakota’s Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
