UPDATE: Death toll rises to 19 children, 2 adults in Texas school shooting

UPDATE (8:25 p.m.): Authorities say the victim death toll from the Texas school shooting now stands at 19 children and two adults.

The latest figures come from Travis Considine, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety. The gunman also died.

UPDATE (3:18 p.m.): The governor of Texas says 14 students and 1 teacher was killed at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

During a news conference in the state capital of Austin, Gov. Greg Abbott said a single gunman, whom he identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, shot and killed 15 people.

Abbott said responding police officers shot and killed the gunman, although who fired the shot that killed Romas has not yet been confirmed.

Two police officers were reportedly struck by gunfire but were not seriously injured.

Abbott pledged significant state support to the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District’s police department, which is the lead investigative agency.

“Our job is multi-fold,” said Abbott. “First, to make sure we address exactly what happened at this crime scene, and second, to make sure we take that information and do everything that is necessary to ensure that crime scenes like this are not going to be repeated in the future — that we’re going to be able to ensure the safety and security of our schools.”
