Holiday message from the Postal Service

RAPID CITY, S.D. — As holiday mail begins flooding in the postal service has some advise to keep your parcels and mail carriers safe.

To keep mail carriers safe during their routs the United State Postal Service is asking for your help. They ask that you ensure safe access to your mailbox that is clear of snow and ice, and park far enough away from curbside mailboxes. This time of year, carrier schedules are also shifting as the holiday season kicks in.

“As far as security of your parcels that we’re delivering, we’ll be delivering during early morning hours that you’re not accustom to seeing your letter carries out there so please be wary of that. Secure your animals, a lot of times the animals will be out … dogs and stuff and they provide a real hazard to our carriers.”

The postal service also recommends not reusing boxes for your deliveries as they may be weak from use and could tear open. To ensure safe delivery, use enough packing to protect the items from at least a five foot drop.
