Teens with airsoft guns send Hill City school into lockdown

HILL CITY, S.D. – The latest on Hill City High School being placed on secure status.

12:15 p.m.

Hill City High School went into a lockdown and then secure status for an hour Friday morning while law enforcement investigated a potential threat.

Around 9:40 a.m., the Pennington County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a Hill City School District staff member who said that two people were in a field across the street from the school with what appeared to be a handgun and a rifle.

Deputies determined that the “weapons” were actually airsoft guns, which are not capable of firing live ammunition. The two boys, ages 17 and 18, were playing in the field. No charges will be filed against them.
