High school spring sports championships still a possibility
State basketball tournaments could be held in June
PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota High School Activities Association Board of Directors held a special meeting on Friday to decide the future of high school sports and activities in the state.
After a lengthy discussion, the Board of Directors announced a plan for all remaining activities based on three things:
– Assuming schools would return by May 4.
– CDC guidelines allowing for activities and gatherings.
– Activities say on the weekends or other days that don’t take students out of school.
State Basketball Tournaments
The Board of Directors decided on a proposal to hold the State Basketball Tournaments sometime between June 15-20.
However, all six classes might be moved to one city or the games could still be held at multiple sites.
A graduating senior would still be allowed to compete, just as long as they haven’t already started accepting aid, practicing or anything else at the college level.
State Track and Field Championships
The State Track and Field Championships would still be held on May 29-30 in Sioux Falls and Tea.
The region meets on May 23 would act as a state qualifier.
Boys State Tennis
If school resumes on May 4, boys tennis would have a one week regular season before the state tournament.
The idea is to have the State ‘AA’ boys tennis tournament on May 22 and the State ‘A’ tennis tournament on May 23, both in Rapid City.
State Girls and State ‘B’ Boys Golf
The Board of Directors would like keep all three, state girls golf tournaments and the State ‘B’ boys golf tournament on June 1-2.
The region golf meets would be held the week of May 26.
Winter Activities Plan
All-State Band – Move to June 11-13 in Mitchell
Visual Arts – To possibly be held during the state basketball tournaments
Spring Activities Plan
All-State Jazz Band – Move to May 15-16
