High school, middle school students invited to SDSM&T for a day

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Area middle school and high school students got a sneak peak into the life of a Hardrocker on Thursday.

The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology invited the students to their annual Engineering & Science Day — all part of the school’s annual Engineers Week celebration.

The day showcased the many engineering and science classes offered at the School of Mines and an introduction to chemistry through a magic show.

“The American Chemical Society Student Chapter are the ones that put the show together,” said Jade Herman, SDSM&T Director Planning & Events. “One of the things that they are really good at doing is taking these really complex chemical reactions and breaking it down in terms that the younger students can understand and it’s very visual.”

The School of Mines hosted over 500 high school and middle school students during the day with the focus on capturing interest in the fields of science and engineering.
