High School and College Football: Yellow Jackets win back the Homestake Trophy

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Black Hills State football team hosted the South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday night in a battle for the Homestake Trophy.

It marked the 134th meeting between these two teams, the longest running series in NCAA Division II.

The Hardrockers entered the game with a slight edge in the series with a record of 63-59-11.

But the Yellow Jackets jumped out to a quick start on Saturday and defeated the Hardrockers, 48-28.

Chance Eben led Black Hills State with 211 yards passing and two touchdowns.

Payten Gilmore had 134 yards rushing and three touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets, while also catching one pass for a touchdown.

For the Hardrockers, Thomas Creese threw for 166 yards and one touchdown.

Plus, Ahmad Lewis rushed for 185 yards and two scores.

The Yellow Jackets improve to 2-4, while the Hardrockers fall to 1-5.

Black Hills State will play travel to Las Vegas, NM on Oct. 19 to play New Mexico Highlands.

Meanwhile, the South Dakota School of Mines will play at Adams State on Oct. 19.

Black Hills State defeated SD Mines on Saturday, 48-28.
