High Mountain Outfitters reach new heights with new gym
A new rock climbing gym is offering people a rigorous way to exercise without having to deal with the elements.
High Mountain Outfitters invited people to break in their climbing walls during the grand opening of their Rapid City climbing gym at 3010 Cambell St. on Saturday.
Climbers of all ages and skill levels clambered up five roped lanes of varying difficulty within the comfort of an indoor space.
Kids and adults also scaled a large boulder installation with overhangs. The rock comes with a cave feature that simulates an outdoor rock climbing experience.
The new gym also boasts a moonboard – a slanted climbing wall dotted with LED lights. Climbers can sync their phones to the LEDs on the walls. They can then ascend the wall on a custom route and compare their time with people across the world.
Patrick Fackler, High Mountain manager, described the Black Hills climbing scene as a “hidden gem” that would make for a great place to operate within.
“It’s a perfect place, honestly – such a gateway into all of the Black Hills. The climbing community is really strong to begin with,” Fackler said. “We couldn’t help but want to be part of that community and help build it up and strengthen it as best we could.”
The gym is open seven days a week, and routes are changed every other week.
