High-flying hounds entertain crowds at Deadwood’s Wild Bill Days

DEADWOOD, S.D. — Main Street in Deadwood hosted an unusual event Saturday — a big air Dock Dogs competition — part of Wild Bill Days.

Img 4399These powerful pooches from around the country competed for first place, launching off a 40-foot-long platform into a pool more than 30-feet-long.

Despite the heat, the dogs — and onlookers — were high energy.

Ron Lauscher and his golden retriever, Jaeger, says, “It’s a lot of stuff going on at once, so you just got to maintain focus and just keep in mind that it’s all about the dogs.”

Lauscher and Jaeger have been competing for three years, a short time — but enough for this part dog, part Cessna to make a name for himself.

“He’s been the number one golden retriever for the last three years in big air for dogs. He jumps 26 feet in the pool, and he’s genuinely just the nicest, greatest boy you can ever meet. He’s my best friend, and there’s nothing more to that,” Lauscher adds.

Jaeger, who travels around the country with Team Flying Gold, went up against dogs like Gus, who has also been on the circuit for three years.

Gus and his handler, Terry Haugen, just recently competed in Oklahoma. Their start with Dock Dogs was unexpected.

“We walked into Scheels one time when they were having an event, so we just decided to join up, and we did good there,” Haugen says. “We decided to do that.”

Long jumps, fetch and plenty of loves made this event paw-fect to watch.
