Helpful tips when spotting more snakes during warmer weather

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Warmer weather can mean more snake sightings.

Here are a few tips on how to keep yourself, family and pets safe from the slithering creatures.

Animal Services and Enforcement says its been getting five calls a week about snakes. Being cold-blooded, snakes enjoy soaking up warmth from the sun.

If you see a snake, it’s recommended that professionals take care of it.

“The calls we’ve had here at The Humane Society, they’ve been at the park and we’ve actually had some at people’s homes here in Rapid City,” said Jerry Steinley, the Executive Director of the Humane Society of the Black Hills. “They share the environment with us so just be aware.”

If you find a snake, call Animal Services Enforcement or your sheriff’s office.

Also, talk to a veterinarian to see if snake vaccinations are right for your pets.
