Gray Eagle charged with manslaughter in shooting of 16-year-old

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A Rapid City man has been charged with First Degree Manslaughter after his first court appearance Monday.

Nathaniel Gray Eagle, 19, was arrested Friday for a shooting on North Maple Avenue that resulted in the death of 16-year-old McKenzie Garreaux.

At around 9:30 a.m. on August 27, police were dispatched to the the 1700 block of North Maple Avenue for a report of gunfire heard in the area on a report that a juvenile female had been shot. On arrival, police located the female and began emergency life-saving measures. A medical unit arrived and transported the female to the hospital for the treatment of serious, life-threatening injuries. Later in the day, police learned that she had died as a result of the injuries sustained in the shooting.

During Monday’s court appearance, The South Dakota State’s Attorney argued Gray Eagle was a danger to community, with a history as a habitual offender. In requesting a high bond amount, the State’s Attorney also cited the fact that Gray Eagle was found with a gun and methamphetamine in his possession.

Gray Eagle is held at the Pennington County Jail with a $500,000 cash only bond.
